Tim Hetherington
Tim Hetherington (b. 1970 UK, † 20 April 2011) was
a British photographer and Oscar nominated film maker. He studied
literature at Oxford University, photojournalism at Cardiff
University, and subsequently developed a documentary practice that
explores the still and moving image. Over the last ten years, he
has focused on issues of young men and conflict. He lived and
worked in West Africa for eight years documenting the Liberian
civil war and its aftermath, and more recently followed a platoon
of US soldiers in Afghanistan. He is the author of 'Long Story Bit
by Bit: Liberia Retold' (Umbrage Editions 2009) and 'Infidel'
(Chris Boot Ltd 2010), and his films include 'Liberia: An Uncivil
War' (2004), Oscar nominated 'Restrepo' (2009), and 'Diary'
(2010).
Tim is a recipient of a Fellowship from the National Endowments
for Science, Technology and the Arts, a Hasselbald Foundation
Grant, the 2008 World Press Photo of the Year, and a Grand Jury
Prize from the Sundance Film festival.
Tim and fellow photographer Chris Hondros were recently killed in
the besieged city of Misurata, Libya. The two were fatally wounded
during an attack by Moammar Gaddafi's forces against rebels in the
city.
