Awoiska van der Molen
Dutch photographer Awoiska van der Molen (1972) attended
ABK Minerva Groningen, Hunter College New York, and attained a
Master's degree in Photography at St Joost, Breda. She photographs
places on the peripheries of anonymous cities, mostly working in
the dark of night, when external and interrupting influences are
minimal and our senses can concentrate fully. Moving through the
night, her working environment is absent of all the disruptive and
hectic qualities of daily city life. The manual printing of her
photographs in the dark room is an important part of her working
process.
Powerful prints
Van der Molen describes the unifying theme of her chosen
subjects: "They carry their own intrinsic power. They stoicly hold
up amidst the eroding and superficial outside world". She compares
her subjects with a 'monadnock' - 'a type of mountain that
arises due to the shrinking of the material after a long period of
erosion. Only the hardest part of rock remains.'
Various prints by Awoiska van der Molen are available at Foam
Editions from € 840.
