Mitch Epstein
American photographer Mitch Epstein donated the work
Fifth. Ave. NYC 1973 to Foam Editions in connection
with the exhibition he had in Foam in 2007. Through his donation,
Epstein supports Foam's initiative to generate its own revenue to
continue offering educational activities.
Mitch Epstein's photographic work, which he has complemented
with sporadic incursions into film and video art, is partly
responsible for the New Color movement in the US. In 1972, Epstein
began taking pictures as a student at Cooper Union in New York. He
quickly subverted the tradition of 35 mm photography by using
colour at a time when it was considered a tacky advertising tool.
In the wake of William Eggleston, Epstein was instrumental in
redefining colour photography as art. His individual pictures are
known for their layering of details and meaning within an elegant
and complex composition.
Highlights at Foam
Epstein has exhibited in museums and galleries
around the world and his work features in many important
collections worldwide. In spring 2007, Foam exhibited a selection
from Family Business and American Power.
Fifth. Ave. NYC 1973 comes in a limited-edition print
of 15.
